Eaglehawk Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
Eaglehawk Rehabilitation Centre is self funded and we are dedicated to the care, welfare, research and rehabilitation of Raptor's. We have cared for hundreds of sick, injured and orphaned Raptor's/Birds of Prey over the past 15 years.
Our involvement with a number of research projects on Raptor's has given us a greater understanding of what these bird's require to survive and breed again in the wild. That understanding is an integral part of any good rehabilitation.
The one thing I have learnt, is that Raptor's need experience and luck to survive in a world where there are cars, fences, shot guns and humans. It is no longer viable to just release a Raptor from an aviary (if the bird has been in care for 4 plus weeks) to watch it fly away, because ultimately it will die of starvation in about 14 days, I can guarantee you.
The rehabilitation of Raptor's is VERY COMPLEX and should not be entered into lightly. Remember these birds are like athletes they need to hunt for a living, if they cannot hunt efficiently enough to survive then they WILL starve to death. Knowing a Raptor's sex, age and history (why it came in for rehab, was it starving and that is why it was hit by a car) is just as important, if not more important than knowing whether it has a fracture.
Without knowing and understanding these things then the correct
rehabilitation procedure will not take place and ultimately the stress (from the Raptor's perspective), time and money spent on this individual will be for nil because it will die when it is eventually released.Female Little Eagle
